Thom and I have been working on a new sofa design for Clark & Huot. The problem is getting it built. Since this unnecessary video was made the furniture builder backed out on us.

Merry belated Christmas. I am enjoying a much needed break from school and have been able to catch up on a few projects. Fall / Winter photos have been added to the Photography page.

Musically speaking, here are 18 artists that made 18 of my favorite songs in 2008:
Fleet Foxes, Sigur Ros, David Byrne and Brian Eno, The Dodos, Azeda Booth, Animal Collective, Hercules and Love Affair, Crystal Castles, The Whitest Boy Alive, Women, Vampire Weekend, Shugo Tokumaru, Port O'Brien, Chad VanGaalen, Bon Iver, The Welcome Wagon, Sun Kil Moon, Hauschka.

2008 was great, hopefully 2009 is fine.

I've been dabbling in some filming over the past few days and made a little video to the song "Landscape (with grass)" by Azeda Booth. If you live in Canada, chances are Azeda Booth are playing in a city near you right now, so visit their website and find out when you can see them live.

I'm writing this from one of the greatest cities in North America - Montreal, Quebec... I've spent the last ten days enjoying the city and choosing / documenting a site in which I'll spend the remainder of my schoolyear designing something for that site. Keep it Cartesian will be at the Vancouver Home & Interior Design Show next week. If you're in the Greater Vancouver Area drop by and say hello to Ryan and Kaley on Saturday at the West Xprssd Showcase - unfortunately Thom and I aren't able to make it... fortunately the Canadian economy hasn't completely tanked yet.

I have begun the last year of my Environmental Design degree and am looking forward to being free of academia. Keep it Cartesian just got back from Calgary where we were part of the West Xprssd design showcase at the Calgary Home & Interior Design Show. We were exhibiting our faceplate design series alongside nine other Western Canadian designers: Contexture Design, Fat Crow, Brent Comber, Alex Suvajac, John Greg Ball, Pulse Furniture, Giraffedactyl, Skookumbrand, and Joel Tobman. MoCo Loco featured the showcase this week. We will also be heading to the Vancouver Home & Interior Design show Oct 16-19 at BC Place.

I finally got around to updating the photography section of this website...

Life is busy. Europe was fantastic and Montreal is beautiful but I am looking forward to coming home soon. >>> I am proud to say that the little design collective I am apart of - Keep it Cartesian has been featured on MoColoco, Apartment Therapy, Notcot, and Design Milk among other reputable design blogs. The response has been overwhelmingly positive and we are frantically trying to decide what to do next. We plan on submitting to be apart of the IDS Prototype exhibit this fall in Toronto to get our name out there and hopefully license the designs. >>> The Andrew Hedlin CD is done and will be released on August 23rd in Winnipeg.

School is over for the year. Well, I actually start a spring class next week, but the insanity of the faculty of architecture is over. I'll be heading to London, Berlin, Oslo, Sykkylven, Copenhagen and Montreal this summer, so I hope to get back into the swing of taking photos for the sake of taking photos. A random collage of my academic work from this year can be seen here

Aside from international galavanting, I have been asked to do the design work for the upcoming conference - Atmosphere to be held at the UofM in 2009. Hosted by the Faculty of Architecture, Atmosphere will include 5 invited speakers, and 24 peer reviewed lecturers . It looks to be quite promsing and I'm honored to be apart of it. I just did some teaser posters to have up at the year end faculty exhibition, and will be working on a website to hopefully be up by the end of May.

I recently took some photos for the Centre for Sustainable Transportation to be used on a display and I just heard that Resource Conservation Manitoba will be using one of the photos from that series on their 2008 Commuter Challenge poster.

Some friends and I got a little ambitious this year and turned a school assignment into a little design collective. You can view our first series of work here - keepitcartesian.com- the concept was a line of redesigned electrical faceplates to provide an additional function other than concealing wires. We had the designs custom fabricated here in Winnipeg and are looking into the possibility of manufacturing a limited run of pieces since the response has been quite positive thus far.

new photos and design work to be posted soon.
